Recently I was introduced to a new phenomenon- #patioPD. I had no idea what it was but luckily my #personalizedPD voxer group hooked me up with the details and I was able to take advantage!

What is #patioPD?

Thanks to Jason Bretzmann for putting it all together a few years ago and now more edu-buddies have jumped on board to help this become a HUGE success.

Here’s the short of it:

Here’s the long of it:

I had to sneak a peek at the website to make sure this was a legit thing and not some joke on me (just kidding!). I certainly learned a thing or two.

Principles of PatioPD:
1. We like learning together
2. We like our families
3. Breaking bread and camaraderie enhance creativity
4. Informal, personalized, low-stress professional development is useful, powerful, and energizing.
5. Sharing and learning exactly what we need honors professionals and learners
6. Learning collectively builds community right near us, while connecting us world-wide

“Let’s get together on everyone’s patios to make this happen!”

In Conclusion

Professional Development is constantly changing to adjust to the world around us. This is one more example of educators leading their own learning. Getting together with other educators to talk shop in a fun, unique way is motivating and a fantastic use of time. I am sure admin would smile upon any educator that took time out of their summer to meet up and learn without being prompted or requested.

The educators mentioned in this post are folks I look up to and learn from daily. I highly suggest you connect with them on social media and do the same. While you’re at it, start participating in EdCamps, patioPD’s, Voxer and Twitter chats, etc. You’re missing out on achieving your potential if you don’t take advantage of the opportunities around you. (Plus, you make some pretty awesome friends too!).
