Students Say the Darndest Things- Vol 10

It has been a while since I posted another edition of “Students Say the Darndest Things.” (If you want to catch up, you can find past volumes here.) As a result of my own children getting older and working with other educators around the world, the next edition in the series was born.

1. Honesty

3rd grader: “Coloring isn’t my specialty.”

T: “What is your specialty?”

3rd Grader: “Asking for things.”

AND…

Me: “Do you know anyone who’s deaf?”
Kid: “Yeah, my dad is! I have to yell at him to get up and he just doesn’t listen!!”

2. Life-Lesson

While playing a card game I struggled to remember the rules. After being politely reminded numerous times by a sweet boy, he finally turned to me and said “Listen, I can’t do it for you.”

3. Song Lyrics

While discussing a story about a widow woman I wanted to ensure the new word “widow” would be remembered, so I asked students towards the end of the story for its meaning. A boy shouts out: Do you know what widow means?
Black widow baby!

4. Borrowed from a mom Facebook group

Mom: “I am 24 years old, is that a lot?”

4 yo: “Whoa, if you put that many hamburgers in a bag, they wouldn’t fit!”

5. Borrowed from the New Teacher Facebook group

This past week talking about veterans:

Kid 1: “Aren’t they the ones who eat all their vegetables?”

Kid 2: “No they are the ones who take care of your pets”

AND…

Let me preface this by saying I had a cold all week…

I got a message from a parent that one of my students was playing “school” and she overheard the student say: “Okay class (clears her throat) my voice is a little off today so bear with me.”

AND…

Teacher: “R, what’s a animal that starts with sk? It’s kinda small and black, has a white stripe?”
R:”…ZEBRA!!”

AND…

Me: “I swear, it’s like talking to walls sometimes.”
Child: “You’re not talking to walls, you’re talking to the board…”
