Election 2012

HOT off the press!! The 2012 election is right around the corner! Regardless of your political views, this is a great time to teach students about American freedom and democracy at its finest. As an educator I am remaining neutral in all accounts, but it is very important that I lay the foundation for what a HUGE time of year this is.

Our Social Studies curriculum touches on citizenship, the voting process, and our judicial system. To expand on these ideas, I created a bulletin board that outlined the two political parties, the candidates, and some of their background. I am NOT going to get into their philosophy or “promises” to the country as that is something parents can inform their children about. But, I did ask the students to think about what they are looking for in a President. Below are some of their responses:

           

Scholastic magazine has been very informative about this topic. It is written in kid friendly way so that students can gain vocabulary related to this monumental event as well as be able explain what is going to be happening in November to their siblings.
