Thanks Tim for your perspective. You're right about this being just one experience that was not successful. Inclusion is a powerful strategy if done correctly. I will keep my mind open on this subject. Thank you for your comment and sharing additional posts on the topic!

Gretchen,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on a difficult topic. I understand where you are coming from because I have been in your shoes... I started out in Special Education as a behavior therapist for young children with autism and then after getting my teaching credential I taught a self-contained classroom for students with moderate to severe autism in California for four years. Currently I teach students with significant intellectual disabilities (including autism) in a self-contained classroom in Georgia.

To your point...there is plenty of inclusion that is done badly! But does every child deserve to be educated along with their peers? Absolutely! Is it their right? Yes. I have written at length about this on my website. I encourage you to check out these series of posts.

and

http://www.thinkinclusive.us/the-self-contained-life-002-on-the-fence/

I am sorry that this inclusion experience has put a bad taste in your mouth...but I encourage you to have an open mind about including students with significant needs in general education it can be done and it is being done all over the world with success.

Thanks for your time and attention.
