Hot Tip Tuesday

Each week I bring to you helpful tips to become a more effective educator on the Always A Lesson fan page on Facebook. (Give it a quick like by clicking here!) I decided to start grouping my social media posts into a blog post in case you didn’t catch it in your feed. (Want more? Time to get caught up:

  1. Instead of celebrating a day off from school for a holiday, spend time teaching kids it’s meaning and purpose before sending them off.
  2. Students respond to events with a range of sensitivity. Be sure to have time and space built into your lesson to support students that have an intense reaction to a particular topic.
  3. Have students repeat the question in their verbal answer as it helps all students process and think on a deeper level.
  4. Begin every lesson with a question so that students know what they must be able to answer by the end of the learning experience.
  5. Let kids teach for a day/lesson. Not only will they grow a deep respect for what you do daily, but you’ll get live feedback on your teaching style as they emulate you. Win-Win.
  6. Classroom decor can make a space feel inviting, but student work that covers the space makes it feel like home
  7. Start each lesson with excitement and a smile so students can imitate your enthusiasm for learning.
  8.  Mark students papers in color to help them differentiate types of errors (ie. grammar vs. content)
  9.  Use group timers throughout your lesson to help students learn to manage their time so that when they are on their own they can model the same habit
  10.  Class chants are not just cutesy classroom management attempts; they are relationship building activities that spark enthusiasm for learning
